The Creator

Before we start this review, let me just say that I have a small distrust for artificial intelligence (AI), and I would love to believe that I’m not being irrational, but honestly, I am. I dread the day when AI takes control and the world collapses... Anyway, back to the review. The Creator was a massive win for me, and I loved almost everything this film had to offer. I approached the film with no preconceived notions, preferring to embrace the unpredictable nature of modern cinema. I knew Gemma Chan was involved and Gareth Edwards was directing, so not too awful of a team, all things considered. At first glance, this movie appeared to follow the path of Elysium or I, Robot, yet it introduced a fresh approach to storytelling with AI. You see, most movies go for the takeover and end-of-world plotline, but instead, The Creator told a story that made me sympathize with the AI. The cinematography, shot beautifully, was some of the best I've seen in a long time. So much of this movie reminded me of Simon Stålenhag’s book, The Electric State. Visually stunning would be a perfect way to describe it. Moreover, the VXF was unattainable, a rarity in today's world. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to Gareth Edwards. Gemma Chan and John David Washington were truly captivating, delivering exceptional performances in each scene. I was surprised to see Allison Janney was in this, and I’m happy to report that she didn’t disappoint. My only complaint would have to be that certain aspects of the plot didn't make sense and felt like placeholders. Although the story didn't feel particularly lengthy, would I have considered cutting a scene or two? Maybe. While I'm not yet advocating for a sequel, I am intrigued by the potential stories it could tell. If you can, check it out at your local theater or whenever it becomes available for rent. Just make sure all the lights are off and you have some nutritious food.
